Common Questions

At MicaWall, we know every project is unique. That’s why we’ve gathered answers to the most common questions about our mineral-based decorative wall textures. From what MicaWall is made of, to how much coverage you can expect per bag, to care and maintenance tips—this page is here to help you get the best results.

  • MicaWall is our line of artisanal, mineral-based decorative wall textures that bring depth, character, and durability to any space. Every product contains Mica, a naturally occurring mineral that creates a distinctive shimmer and dimensional effect—hence the name MicaWall. Our collections, including StoneFX, MetalFX, and GlowFX, give designers, contractors, and homeowners versatile options to transform walls & ceilings into unique works of art. This eco-friendly, chemical-free formula is safe for interiors and contributes to a healthier environment. Beyond aesthetics, MicaWall also delivers functional benefits such as thermal insulation, moisture regulation, and energy savings, making it both a design feature and a practical choice for modern spaces.

  • MicaWall is crafted from a proprietary blend of cotton, silk, mica, mineral aggregate, and CMC (organic glue). This unique formula combines natural fibers with mineral shimmer to create durable, artisanal wall textures with striking visual depth. The blend is 100% natural and chemical-free, offering not only a beautiful finish but also eco-friendly benefits such as improved indoor air quality, thermal insulation, and moisture control.

  • On average, one bag of MicaWall covers approximately 50 square feet when applied at a thickness of about 1/8".

Coverage is directly influenced by application thickness and technique. MicaWall is designed to be applied at approximately 1/8" thick. If the material is going on thicker than this, it’s often a sign that the mix is too thick and may benefit from adding a small amount of water. Applying MicaWall thicker than recommended isn’t harmful—it simply means you’re using more material than necessary, resulting in less coverage per bag. For certain applications, MicaWall can intentionally be applied thicker or even in multiple layers to achieve added depth, texture, or enhanced thermal and acoustic properties.

  • MicaWall is designed to be low-maintenance thanks to its all-organic composition, which naturally provides anti-static properties that help it repel dust and debris. For routine cleaning, simply dust gently with a soft cloth, feather duster, or vacuum with a brush attachment. If needed, you can lightly wipe with a damp sponge or cloth—just avoid soaking the surface. Because MicaWall is made from natural fibers and minerals, it’s best to avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or excessive scrubbing, as these may damage the finish. With simple care, your MicaWall surfaces will retain their texture, shimmer, and durability for years.

  • At 70°F (21°C) and 70% humidity, MicaWall typically dries in 24–48 hours. In some conditions it may take longer, especially with higher humidity, lower temperatures, or limited airflow.

The single biggest factor that speeds up drying is airflow. To help MicaWall dry faster:

    • Use fans to keep air moving across the surface
    • Maintain adequate heat
    • Control humidity when possible (a dehumidifier helps a lot)

Dry time will vary based on room conditions and application thickness, but with good airflow and reasonable climate control, most applications fall within the 24–48 hour range.

  • Once mixed, MicaWall can be used for up to 24 hours, provided it is kept covered and not allowed to dry out.

We do not recommend using mixed material beyond this timeframe for several reasons:

    • Adhesion: MicaWall contains an organic glue. If the material remains wet for extended periods without drying, the adhesive can begin to break down, which may reduce bonding performance.
    • Color consistency: Depending on the color, extended wet storage can cause slight color changes or tarnishing, leading to visible differences between areas or walls.
    • Texture consistency: Over time, the cotton blend can absorb excess moisture and appear slightly swollen, which may alter the final texture or pattern.

For best results—adhesion, color accuracy, and finish consistency—we recommend mixing only what you plan to use within 24 hours.

Pro tip: Instead of discarding any leftover material at the end of a job, use it to create small sample boards. These are perfect for upselling additional rooms or showcasing finishes to future clients and contractors.

  • MicaWall is most commonly installed over drywall, but it can be applied to nearly any surface as long as the substrate is structurally sound, clean, and properly prepared.

    Suitable substrates include:

    • Drywall
    • Wallpaper (secure and well-adhered)
    • Wood
    • Concrete and masonry
    • Glass
    • Metal

Proper priming is essential. Smooth or non-porous surfaces—such as glass, metal, or glossy finishes—require a high-adhesion or textured (grit) primer to ensure proper bonding. Once primed correctly, MicaWall will adhere reliably and perform as intended.

  • Because MicaWall can be re-hydrated with water, it’s easy to repair or remove compared to traditional wall coverings.

    • Small Repairs or Deep Scratches:
For minor damage, you can often use the surrounding material to fill the affected area. Lightly mist the spot with a spray bottle, allow 30–60 seconds for the moisture to absorb, then smooth it over with our specialized Ghost Trowel. Since MicaWall is applied at about 1/8" thickness, there’s usually enough material to pull tighter and close up small imperfections seamlessly.
    • Full Removal:
For larger areas or complete removal, use a pressurized pump spray bottle to evenly wet the wall. After letting the water soak in, the surface can be scraped off. If it doesn’t come off easily, simply re-spray and let it absorb longer. Any small debris or minerals left behind can be wiped away with a wire dish cloth or sponge, leaving the wall ready for a fresh application or another finish.

This ability to be re-hydrated makes MicaWall not only versatile for design updates but also sustainable and repairable, minimizing waste compared to paint or wallpaper.

  • MicaWall is not fully waterproof, but it is naturally moisture-resistant thanks to its mineral and fiber composition. This means it can help regulate humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture, which contributes to a healthier indoor climate. However, MicaWall is not designed for direct water exposure (such as showers, saunas, or kitchen backsplashes). Because it isn’t waterproof, MicaWall is also easy to repair or remove—the surface can be re-hydrated with water, allowing for touch-ups or full replacement when needed.

  • Yes. MicaWall itself will not ignite or propagate flame.

It’s important to understand that while MicaWall is non-combustible, it does not make the underlying substrate fireproof. If applied over materials such as drywall or wood, those materials can still burn under fire conditions.

MicaWall will not contribute to flame spread, but overall fire performance depends on the complete wall assembly.

  • MicaWall is made from naturally occurring minerals, including mica. These minerals are commonly sourced from quartz-bearing rock, which can contain trace amounts of crystalline silica. In powdered form, mineral dust of any kind can be irritating if inhaled repeatedly over long periods — especially in occupational settings.

For this reason, OSHA requires a precautionary label stating that prolonged or repeated inhalation of fine dust may cause lung irritation or damage. This is the same type of warning you’ll find on products like cement, joint compound, plaster, tile mortar, and other mineral-based building materials.

  • Yes. MicaWall is safe when used as directed, and no special protection is required beyond standard best practices.

The hazard warning on the bag applies only to the dry powder mix. Like many mineral-based materials, fine dust can become airborne when the dry product is opened or mixed. For this reason, wearing a dust mask while handling or mixing the dry powder is recommended to avoid breathing airborne particulates.

Once water is added and the material is mixed, airborne dust is eliminated. At that point, there is no inhalation risk, and a mask is no longer necessary. Normal application can continue safely.

After MicaWall is applied to the wall and allowed to dry, the material is fully bound to the surface. The finished, cured wall contains zero inhalation risk and poses no health concern.
